  4. Goodbye Professor.

RIP Professor Perkins. Thank You. For being my advisor, supporter, and friend. For constantly talking with me about marine biology, travel, and basketball. For making my year abroad possible. For sharing your stories. For so much more, thank you.

  8. My college basketball teams had an amazing night!

Duke [vs. St John], University of Memphis [vs. Marshall], and St. Mary’s [vs. BYU] all WON!

I had the pleasure of attending the University of Memphis game at the FedEx Forum tonight and can I just say, the stadium and game absolutely blew me away! It was like attending the Southern Regionals all over again. The huge crowd, the intense cheers, the fun music courtesy of the sports band, the good pom-pom/cheerleader people, etc. It was AMAZING! I didn’t bring my big camera (because I’ve heard security there is strict on that) but I did bring my Canon point-and-shoot, and my iPhone, so between the two of them I have some decent shots and videos of what turned out to be a very suspenseful and engaging game! It was so much fun to see another team’s strategy and style of playing and compare that to Saint Mary’s (or CBU, a division II school, for that matter) and I enjoyed cheering them on!

They narrowly beat Marshall (GO TIGERS!) while I also “watched” SMC beat BYU (a bit suspenseful toward the end with all the fouls, and debris being thrown on the court…) via Twitter (thank goodness for twitter).

All in all, it was a fabulous night for my college basketball teams!

[I also went to dinner before hand with Stokes, Mary Kate, and their two friends, at this amazing Italian restaurant downtown and it was sooooo delish! Seriously amazing food and drink!]

The greatest mistake in the world is to pretend to be someone you’re not in order to please someone else. Have the courage to be yourself, no matter what. If you ruffle someone’s feathers their reaction is not your business. All you can do is be who you are and who you are is one of a kind. But remember, the same thing goes for everyone else so chances are you’ll get your feathers ruffled, too. One word will solve all your problems: allow.

  14. A quick reflection.

I have really enjoyed working with a 4th grade girl, Indra, who is fairly new to America (less than a year), and came here from Bhutan. I’ve been working on basic ESL concepts, sight words, spelling out words, etc. and she is so sweet and usually pretty good at putting forth effort :). She’s mischievous but very nice (evidence? she earned a sticker for knowing her first set of sight words, which she then gave to me because she wanted me to have it. I stuck it on my phone.)

Second grade religion class never ceases to amuse me.

5th grade math frustrates me. It’s that point where they’re working on more advanced concepts, and somehow find it okay to forget addition and subtraction.

7th grade math is rewarding, and I can reason with them.

    Middle School spelling is hilarious.

When students try to write “cute” it’s just an eyesore and hard to read.

  15. today.

Enjoyed a fabulous dinner last night with Chay, Andrew, and Jessie and then I came home and had a good chat with Jaime. Then I spent hours going through photos and getting them ready for a few presentations De La Salle has this coming week. It was a very nice, fairly relaxing Friday!

Now I’m about to head downstairs to help with Saturday morning brunch, a community affair here at DLS Memphis. I’m thinking we’ll probably have eggs, fruit salad, some sort of apple pastry thing, and maybe some veggies. Should be good.

Later this evening I’m heading downtown with Mary Kate and Stokes to eat dinner and watch a University of Memphis vs. Marshall basketball game at the FedEx Forum. I’m SUPER excited!
