Went for a 3 mile run today! New city and first run in awhile made for an interesting combo. Also the fact that everyone considers where I live in Memphis to be not-so-safe…oh well, I was safe. Kept my ipod volume low, carried a rock incase a dog tried to attack me, and told my housemate when I was leaving and when to expect me back. Best part? I survived, and had a wonderful run!
Top Left - random mattress and debris on the sidewalk during my run
Top Right - Running on an overpass over train tracks. Trains are ALWAYS coming and going here.
Bottom - Outran a thunderstorm and some tornado warnings. Sky was beautiful though!

-This is why tomorrow I am going to run. And I’m done with not following my schedule, dismissing my training plan. There is no plus side to it, nothing to gain by not doing it. So, I guess I’ll just do it.
Here’s to hoping that I’ll get to bed in the next half hour and wake up in time to go for a run and straighten up my room before my hair appointment (getting my hair dyed/roots touched up, finally!!!! I will be providing the hair lady with like 10 photos of Beckett’s hair for inspiration and guidance lol.) and then my friend Breezy is driving up from LA and I can’t wait to see her because I love her and miss her like 24/7 (she’s like me. she takes too many photos, travels to too many places, and is vegetarian. perfect friendship!). Anyway, better go polish my Statement of Purpose some more and then call it a night…
Also, HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY NATALEE!!!!!!!!!!
They were the most awkward 5 miles of my life…
Solid day here in front-porch-land aka Pittsburgh. Went to work, walked half an hour from the T stop to work, and then walked back at the end of the day (I’m liking this new auto-exercise that gets me to work), had a good (if smelly, I had to clean a bucket that was encrusted with algae) day at work, talked to some good friends back home, and went for an extremely refreshing, energizing and satisfying run.
Which brings me to my next point.
Ever since I started running back in September, I have said time and time again that GETTING THE RUNNING CLOTHES/SHOES ON AND FEET OUT THE DOOR IS THE HARDEST PART OF RUNNING. A million excuses pop into my head (what about the weather, too hot, too cold, too humid, too whoknowswhat, I’m tired, my foot hurts, my head hurts, I’m hungry, on and on and on). But once I get myself out the door, it’s magic. I’m good to go, iPod blasting, ready for a great workout. Unfortunately, knowing this doesn’t make the pre-run any better. It does, however, speed up my get-ready-and-go time, in order to prevent time for changing my mind. Just thought I’d share, I’m sure some of my Fitblr friends out there can relate :)
On a completely unrelated note, people look SO tired on the commute home from work. Rumpled clothes, tired eyes, massaging of temples, popping ibuprofen, and the ever-present after work calls to recap the day to whomever is on the other end of the phone. Complaints about bosses, about co-workers, about the coffee machine, about transportation, family, time, on and on and on some more. It really is quite intriguing, especially for someone who LOVES people-watching (aka yours truly).
Anyway, just my ramblings for the day. Hope everyone’s good in cyberspace!
Walked 2 hours.
Ran for 1/2 hour.
Did some ab work.
Worked a full day at the science center.
Talked to my mommy.
Enjoyed a Starbucks vivanno & studied Irish for 2 hours.
VERY. PRODUCTIVE.
just the way I like it :)
Home.
Ate delicious, homemade food that actually tastes like food, not cans.
Drank DELISH coffee.
Got new converse summer sandals!
Hung out with some of my most favorite neighbors, the Hertls!
BOUGHT NEW, BEAUTIFUL, AMAZING (expensive…eek!) RUNNING SHOES!!!
did some laundry with my mommy.
failed to find a new concealer.
failed to buy new workout shorts and also failed to buy new work pants.
took my NEW RUNNING SHOES on their maiden run! It was great! My lungs hate the cooler air now (gosh, go figure) but the shoes felt like my feet were attached to a high speed train lol (kudos to whoever can get that movie reference)
Found my favorite air-filled easter bunnies :)
Went to another neighbor’s house to randomly watch a Filipino box, and talked to my friend Raisha on the phone!
After the morning snorkel, after lunch, after the last ESL class, after site clean up cleaning boats, I cranked out a 2.3 mile run, ate dinner and went out for our last Saturday night on the town!
RUN - The run was great, a little bit worse asthma wise but the inhalers did their job and I had a good run. About half way out I passed some white guys running (if they’re not SFS people, white people are really rare here) and they gave me high fives. It was a tad odd but it made me laugh. Anyway, felt like a good run, not sore today so that’s nice. If I’m not too busy this evening, I was thinking about trying a 5K but I would have to look up the route so I’m not sure if I’ll have time to figure it out….
Night out - Night out was epic. Not really any good words to accurately describe it other than both staff and students were out, together, dancing, and our curfew got extended until 1:30am (from the Saturday curfew of midnight, which is already later than every other day) so yeah. Pretty much amazing.
Haven’t gone on a run in WAY TOO LONG.
Asthma is doing better and I’m bringing my emergency inhaler so hopefully all goes well!
See you on the flip side!
UPDATE: Went for a run. It was so freaking AMAZING! Not as good (pace and time wise) as in Ireland but waaaaay better than when I first when for a run here, and definitely a nice workout. I feel fantastic (if sweaty) right now. Sun came out half-way through my run, making me sweat buckets (it’s a humid 86ish)…only had to use my emergency inhaler once (not bad, last time I had to use it three times and I was only walking)…ran past two horsies, more dogs than I can count and some flamingo! All in all, a success!
UPDATE #2: Tracked my run, it was almost exactly 2 miles in 24 minutes [12 minute mile]…that’s up from my 5K pace of a 10.6 minute mile…BUT it’s not up by a lot and I’m confident I can get it down to lower than my 5K pace if I put in some good work when I get back to America. I hope to do another 5K in either PA or CA this summer…
C25K W4D1 BRING IT!
-feeling super pumped about this run, about to head out armed with my ipod, mobile and running shoes, let’s do this!
p.s. tried on some new running shoes the other day and ohmigoodness they felt like heaven….i think these old shoes of mine might need to say goodbye soon…
update: W4D1 DONE! I am so glad I was so pumped about the run because without that, there would have been NO way I would have finished that run. Definitely the hardest run thus far. I don’t know if it was the mental part about upping the jogging time or decreasing the walking time but by the middle of the run my legs were MAD as all get out at me. Stupid lactic acid. However, I DIDN’T STOP! I found that as long as I blasted my iPod (I know there are some of you reading this who don’t believe in running with an iPod. good for you. you’re not me. I wouldn’t get out the door without my music blasting) and kept running, I was ok. My train of thought went something like this….
“cause you’re the queen of the barbie nati…owwww my legs breathe in out in out ohmigosh how long have I been running? it has to have been 5 minutes already, let me just check the time. no if I do that I might be overwhelmed by how long I have to keep running…I’m a one girl revolution. Hey I love that song by Superchick, if I just sing until it’s over, it will probably be time to walk…*song finishes* woohoo only 10 seconds left score!”
also, ate yummy food today
Breakfast: 2 eggs over easy, 1 slice of whole wheat bread, 1 banana
Lunch: 1 bowl of yogurt with 1 wheetabix & 1 tbsp granola
Dinner: 1 bowl of vegetable soup, 1/2 slice of brown bread, 1 fillet of herbed salmon
Dessert: homemade oatmeal cookies (healthy version with wheat, olive oil and honey!)
note: I accidentally burnt half the batch of cookies because I forgot they were in the oven…oops! Well, when Julia Child did that she just chucked them, I did the same :D The half that WEREN’T burn were delish! Packaging them to freeze for easy snacks.
